If you're serious about training for boxing, then you need a round timer for a variety of reasons. Boxing of course is fought in rounds, with professional rounds lasting three minutes. In between each round is a rest of exactly one minute. The best way to train - for anything - is to closely mimic the situations that you will encounter as closely as possible.

Therefore, training for 20 minutes then resting for five minutes has no use in the boxing world. You want to train your body to be able to go 100% for three minutes, and then to quickly recover in just 60 seconds. A round timer enables you to set your training up to correspond with these time lengths perfectly.

Additionally, most round timers allow you to change settings. This means you can set the round lengths to two, three or four minutes or cut down the rest to just 30 seconds. This can make your workout more intense, without causing you any more hassle.

Setting up your workout to match the rhythms of boxing can be difficult without a round timer. You can try to listen to a three minute long song, but then you still have to wait for a minute and the next song won't be timed properly. You can't wear a watch or easily refer to a stopwatch while boxing, taking that option out.

Your best bet is to use a round timer. Another great feature of boxing round timers is that they will sound a warning when the round is closing. Usually this means with 10 seconds left in the round a buzzer will go off, just like if you were in the ring. Before the rest period is up you'll also hear a notification, so you will be ready to spring back into action without any problem.

With a round timer, all of the legwork and all of the guesswork has been taken care of. You'll train for the exact amount of time that you need to do, and you'll do it without having to scramble to refer to a clock or watch. You'll receive notices when rounds are close to beginning or ending. If you have a gym, participate in sparring or train with multiple people, you can all be kept on pace with the same piece of equipment, ensuring you are all on the same track.
