Safety is always the first priority when it comes to kids getting in the ring and boxing. Obviously the proper gear such as gloves are extremely important, but headgear might be the most important piece of the puzzle.
When you're shopping for kids boxing headgear you have to pay attention to sizing. Don't settle for anything that wouldn't be a good fit, and don't try to have you kid make due with adult sizing because you don't want to buy anything new. Improper sizing can fail to adequately and completely protect your child, and it can even be dangerous in terms of hindering vision, breathing and circulation.
You may also want to consider some protective gear that offers more complete protection for the entire face. Standard boxing headgear protects the top of the head and the ears, extending down a bit over the cheeks and jaw. More complete coverage would go down the entire side of the face, and some youth headgear will also offer protection over the nose as well.
All of the major brands can be trusted, so you don't have to worry about buying something that won't live up to its billing. But every style will be different and some clearly offer more complete protection than others.
Youth Boxing Equipment Safety Rules
1. Make sure that your kids know how to put the equipment on, and how to secure it properly with any straps or other fasteners that the gear might have. Even the best protective gear won't do anybody much good if it's not worn properly.

2. Lay down the ground rules that even with this protective gear, sparring should only be done with supervision, whether that means the trainer at a gym you take them to or yourself. You don't want your kid and his or her friends goofing off and trying to hit each other in the head as hard as they can because they have some headgear.
3. Use kids boxing headgear with the other appropriate youth boxing equipment. That means properly padded gloves, handwraps, cups and body protectors and mouth guards as well. Headgear is only one piece of the puzzle.
4. Don't use anything that's not sized properly. Proper sizing is extremely important for youth boxing equipment, particularly head gear. Something too large could block vision, hinder breathing or fail to pad the proper spots of the face and something too small could cut off circulation, make breathing difficult and so forth.
Also, don't forget to purchase boxing mouth guards as well. The headgear in tandem with that protection will fully protect your child and his most precious possession, his head! Also make sure to use properly padded gloves, and a cup and body protector as well when sparring.
There is plenty of high quality youth boxing equipment available today. Just make sure to purchase some of the best kids boxing headgear that's available, and run over some quick and simple rules with your kids to make sure you keep them safe and sound.
