Many people think that you can't truly practice dirty boxing and infighting with your heavy bag exercises. The thinking is that you really need a sparring partner in order to hone this part of your game. To an extent this is going to be true, but the same can be said for any aspect of boxing. One of the most common questions related to boxing training is should boxers lift weights? It's a question that many people have different opinions on, and it's an important subject to tackle whether you are looking for beginner boxing tips or you are a serious boxer looking to get to the next level.
Even professional fighters don't all agree. The classic example I always use is that Muhammad Ali never trained at all with weights, and many other fighters did not either. Meanwhile, today many fighters seem to incorporate at least some weight lifting into their boxing training. So should boxers weight lift? More... »

Fighters in training often struggle with the best ways to build muscle for boxing. Strength exercises for boxing have to be different than strength exercises for other athletes. In boxing, a fighter's flexibility and lean muscle mass are extremely important, whereas you don't want to just pack on tons of extra muscle.
One of the best strength training exercises for boxing is the pull up, and it's close cousin, the chin up. Both of these are body weight exercises, meaning you aren't relying on extra weights or machines, you are building strength through working out with your own body weight. This applies great to boxing, and will help you add tons of functional strength to use in the ring, without bulking you up too much or slowing you down. More... »

A speed bag is one of the most classic symbols of a boxer in training, and learning to use a speed bag can be a slow and frustrating process. I've known great athletes who have been stumped by the simple but daunting task of training with a speed bag. It doesn't have to be that way though, you just need to learn the basic principles of using one.
Training with a speed bag definitely comes with a learning curve. So one of the most important things right from the beginning is to accept that you aren't going to appear like Sugar Ray Leonard in your first training session. But if you take some time, you'll be making that sweet speed bag music (the intense drumming rhythm of you striking the bag and the bag bouncing off its support) in no time. More... »
