Whether you call them boxing mitts, focus mitts, punching mitts or anything else, they can be effectively used for boxing training at home, allowing you to take advantage of all of their great benefits. This includes improving your technique and timing, and developing a complete and cohesive boxing game that includes both offense and defense. It's no longer true that you need to belong to a boxing gym in order to utilize training with punching mitts. Now, you can have one buddy or training partner come over, and the two of you can train together, alternating turns for who punches and who holds the mitts. Alternatively, for the more industrious out there, you can even setup your mitts on stationary or moving targets, and then you can train in boxing at home using punching mitts without the help of a single other person.

In this article though, we'll focus on using boxing mitts for training in boxing at home with the help of a buddy and partner. The two of you can work together using these tips, drills and techniques to improve your game and start seeing drastically better results in no time at all.

Boxing Training at Home: Punching Mitts

There are many different techniques and drills you can perform with boxing mitts at home as long as you have a partner, and you can enjoy many different benefits. One of the primary points however is focusing on targeted, accurate, crisp and well-timed punches. It's one thing to know how to throw a nice left hook, or to be able to throw it at a large, immobile target like a punching bag. But it's another thing entirely when a target pops up and then disappears, is at a very specific, small location, and requires you to hit in the perfect way. This is what boxing training mitts really enable you to do.

Besides sparring, it's the best practice for throwing precise and crisp shots. You will learn how to land your punches at the right distance, so the full force of your power explodes on the target, instead of pushing into it, or reaching for the target after your peak extension. You'll also be working on your timing and your accuracy, hitting exact locations, throwing punches to different spots, and all of these specific skills that are often overlooked in basic training, but are really the foundation of improvement and actually fighting in the ring.

Don't forget though that with boxing mitts you can also work on your defense with the help of your training partner. As you're throwing combinations, your partner can wing shots at your head that you have to duck under before countering. Or your partner can feint punches, or keep a mitt in front of your face to obstruct your vision. With all of these tactics, you'll learn how to maneuver your body and head in the right ways so as to avoid being hit with counters, while still being on your offensive game.

That's the most important thing as well, boxing training at home often misses out on the development of a cohesive and well-rounded boxing game. You might understand offensive techniques and defensive moves, but without that sparring and other training, can you really develop a game that transitions smoothly between the two worlds, and allows you to be at your best at all times and in all situations? When you're working on the mitts, you'll learn to incorporate defensive moves with punches, and you'll learn how to put your shots together at close range, at different angles, in different orders and more. It's a fantastic way, and the only real way without sparring, to add this amount of skill to your game.

When to Use the Boxing Mitts During your Training Routine

I generally recommend that you spend time on the mitts before you use the heavy bag. In this way, you're still at your freshest, and you can focus on delivering quick but technical punches with a high amount of power as well. After you spend five rounds on the heavy bag, your form is going to be decreasing and you won't be able to reap all of the benefits of really honing and refining your skills.

Therefore, while you can do anything that you'd prefer, I recommend to jump into using the punching mitts as soon as you're warmed up. Don't switch off between the puncher and the mitts-guy every round either. Spend 3-5 rounds performing one role before switching, to keep you in the right mindset and physical state.
